Braces are difficult to clean around at the best of times so any electric toothbrush that helps make the job easier is a blessing. My best overall choice is the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 in the USA and the Oral-B Genius 9000 in the UK.
As a dentist who places braces and has regularly written about electric toothbrushes for over 4 years, I feel qualified to give you the hints and tips that work for my patients. Every month I consider any new electric toothbrushes that have come on the market and update this list if I think they are good enough. I last updated this article in February 2019.

Oral-B Ortho and Interspace Brush head (USA)
These brush heads are the reason why I have been recommending Oral-B electric toothbrushes to you. The Oral-B Ortho Brush Head and Oral-B Interspace Brush Head have both been specifically designed to clean braces. To my knowledge, Oral-B is the only manufacturer to design brush heads, especially for orthodontics.
The Ortho brush head has specially positioned bristles to clean around orthodontic brackets. The interspace brush head is designed to clean underneath the orthodontic wire and by the gum margin. The reason I really like the Oral B Ortho brush head is because the bristles have been specially designed to clean around orthodontic brackets and modules. It also has indicator bristles that tell you when to replace the brush head.
The Oral-B interspace brush head is fantastic for dislodging food that has got stuck underneath the orthodontic wire. It is also highly manoeuvrable and easy to use.

2 Features the best electric toothbrush for braces must have
2 minute timer with quadpacer
Did you know that most people brush their teeth for only 45 seconds! Brushing your teeth for 2 minutes is integral for your oral health and well being. This is even more important when you have braces fixed to your teeth. Brushing your teeth for 2 minutes with a good electric toothbrush will help reduce plaque and prevent tooth decay.
A quadpacer timer will help ensure that you clean all your mouth evenly. Everyone has preferred teeth they like to clean, usually the upper front teeth. This results in some teeth being cleaned more than others. A quadpacer reminds you to change areas of your mouth, so you clean all teeth equally.
Visible Pressure Sensor
You are only meant to brush with the weight of an orange, which is 150 grams of force. Most people brush with far more force than that. This can be particularly detrimental if you are brushing with braces as it can cause unnecessary wear of the teeth and even dislodge brackets.
A visible pressure sensor is a light that flashes when you are pressing too firmly with the electric toothbrush. It is a must-have for the best electric toothbrush for braces.

The Oral-B Genius 8000 comes rammed with features which are ideal for braces. For starters, it has the two must have features, the 2 minute quadpacer timer and the visible pressure sensor. The visible pressure sensor is quite fancy and it allows you to choose the colour it flashes when you are pressing too firmly.
The Oral-B Genius 8000 is compatible with the Oral-B Ortho Brush heads and interspace brush. This will allow you to easily clean around your braces and underneath the wire.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Genius Pro 8000
The Oral-B Genius 8000 also uses the 3D oscillating rotating mechanism of action. This is where the brush head spins right, left and pumps up and down in quick succession. I have written in detail about why this cleans better than the sonicare. The oscillating rotating action will ensure your teeth and braces remain clean
Battery Life – Oral-B Genius Pro 8000
The battery life has been much improved and lasts 2 weeks of use. This equates to roughly 56 minutes of continuous use. Usually, Oral-B electric toothbrushes last only for half that time. It also charges much quicker taking 5-6 hours from flat to completely charged.
Bluetooth Connectivity – Oral-B Genius Pro 8000
The Oral-B Genius 8000 also comes with Bluetooth connectivity as standard. This means you can connect it to your smartphone via the Oral-B app. This will keep track of when you are brushing your teeth and how long you are brushing your teeth for. It is a handy oral hygiene tool.
Travel Case – Oral-B Genius 8000
The Oral-B Genius 8000 travel case is luxurious. It is made of white faux leather and stores two brush heads and the electric toothbrush handle.
Value for Money – Oral-B Genius Pro 8000

This is on the higher end of the market however given the number of features this electric toothbrush has for braces, it is worth it. Also once the electric toothbrush handle has been bought, the running costs are reasonable.

Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 best electric toothbrush for braces in the US
The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 is not only the best electric toothbrush for braces, but it is my favourite electric toothbrush. Its combination of reasonable price, features and specialized brush head, will make sure your braces remain squeaky clean.
Oral-B Pro 5000 SmartSeries
The Oral-B Pro 5000 Smartseries is a fantastic electric toothbrush for braces. It contains many of the same features as the Oral-B Genius 8000 however the overall package is not as polished. The materials feel cheaper and the battery life is not as good. It is still good enough for second place though. The one big advantage of it is the cheaper price.
Features – Oral-B Pro 5000
The Oral-B Pro 5000 smart series comes with the two must have features for the runner up of the best electric toothbrush with braces, a 2 minute timer with quadpacer and visible pressure sensor. You cannot change the colour of the pressure sensor like you can with the Oral-B Genius 8000 but this is not an essential feature.
The Oral-B Pro 5000 is compatible with the Ortho and interspace brush head. This means that it can be customized to clean well around wires and braces.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Pro 5000
As with all Oral-B Pro electric toothbrush, it uses the 3D oscillating rotating action, which as discussed previously is my preferred method of cleaning action. The cleaning power of the Oral-B Pro 5000 is great and will leave your teeth feeling fresh.
Battery Life – Oral-B Pro 5000
The battery life is not as good as the Oral-B Genius 8000. This is because the Oral-B Pro 5000 Smartseries uses a nickel metal hydride battery. It is advertised at 11 days worth of charge which is 44 minutes of continuous charge. From personal experience, the battery life is slightly less than advertised. The battery does take a good 8-9 hours for it to charge from flat.
Bluetooth Connectivity – Oral-B Pro 5000
The Oral-B Pro 5000 Smartseries comes with bluetooth connectivity which allows it to be connected to the Oral-B app. It does not have position detection like the Oral-B Genius 8000 however it still monitors the number of times you brush your teeth and for how long.
Travel Case – Oral-B Pro 5000
The Oral-B Pro 5000 comes with a blue hard plastic travel case. It stores two brush heads and the electric toothbrush handle. It is useful for when you are going on holiday.
Value for Money

This represents fantastic value for money as it is considerably cheaper than the Oral-B Genius 8000. It is a mid-range electric toothbrush and would be suitable for anyone looking into a good electric toothbrush for braces without a steep price tag.

Oral-B Pro 5000 – Second Best Electric Toothbrush for Braces in the US
The Oral-B Pro 5000 is a great electric toothbrush for people who are looking for a cheaper Oral-B Genius 8000. It does not compromise on too many of the features and its build quality is solid if uninspiring. A definite worthwhile runner up and one that you should take a look at before making a decision.
Oral-B Pro 1500
The Oral-B Pro 1500 is a simple but solid electric toothbrush that has all the features necessary to be a good electric toothbrush for braces. It does lack some of the features that the more expensive electric toothbrushes have however this is more than made up for by the price. The value for money on the Oral-B Pro 1500 is great. For people looking for a simple electric toothbrush for braces that does the job without the bells and whistles, this is the electric toothbrush for you.
Features – Oral-B Pro 1500
The Oral-B Pro 1500, although basic comes with the two must-have features, the 2-minute quadpacer timer and the visible pressure sensor. The visible pressure sensor is located at the rear of the electric toothbrush handle and flashes red when you press too hard.
The Oral-B Pro 1500 is compatible with the Ortho brush head and the interspace brush head. Although the Oral-B Pro 1000 comes with as standard with the Crossaction brush head (which is a fantastic brush head, if I do say so myself), the ortho and interspace brush head can be bought seperately and will fit on this Oral-B model.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Pro 1500
As with the previous Oral-B electric toothbrushes reviewed, the Oral-B Pro 1500 uses the 3D oscillating rotating motion. This has in studies been shown to outperform both Sonic motion and manual toothbrushes. The Oral-B Pro 1500 will thus have enough cleaning power to adequately clean your braces especially if you use the ortho brush head.
Battery Life – Oral-B Pro 1500
The battery life has been new and improved lithium-ion battery which should last for up to 2 weeks of use two minutes twice a day. There are some reports in January 2019 however that the lithium-ion battery after 3 months of use starts to not hold the charge well. As this is still a relatively new electric toothbrush, this may just be a faulty batch and I am sure that Oral-B will rectify the problem. Some people may consider the Oral-B Pro 1000 at this point but this does not have a visible pressure sensor.
No Travel Case – Oral-B Pro 1500
It does not come with a travel case and the Oral-B Pro 1500 does not have Bluetooth connectivity. This is not really surprising for an electric toothbrush more on the budget end of the market.
The Oral-B Pro 1500 is waterproof, which is certainly an important feature for any electric toothbrush. I wouldn’t use a non-waterproof electric toothbrush as it could be potentially dangerous!
Value for Money – Oral-B Pro 1500
This is one area where the Oral-B Pro 1500 really shines, it is cheap! Check out how much the Oral-B Pro 1500 is on Amazon here. This is significantly cheaper than the other electric toothbrushes in this review.
Do remember that this electric toothbrush is cheaper for a reason and do not expect it to be as well made or as feature rich as the other electric toothbrushes in this review. The Oral-B Pro 1500 will be far easier to clean braces than a manual toothbrush and would be useful trial electric toothbrush for someone who has never used one before.

Oral-B Pro 1500 – Third Best Electric toothbrush for Braces in the US
The Oral B Pro 1500 is a great, no frills electric toothbrush that is good for your pocket. It is the electric toothbrush to go for if you are concerned with budget more than features. Providing Oral-B sort out the battery (which I am positive they will do), this will be an excellent choice and well deserving of the spot, third best electric toothbrush for braces in the US.
Oral-B Genius 9000
The Oral- B Genius 9000 is a fantastic electric toothbrush for braces. In fact is not only good for braces, it is my favourite electric toothbrush overall. It has all the necessary features and will make your braces feel sparkly clean with the 3D oscillating rotating action.
Yes, some people may argue, the Bluetooth connectivity and 5 cleaning modes are a bit superfluous. The Oral-B Genius 9000 does all the basics correct and will have features that everyone can enjoy. All of this in a well built, easy to use package and you have the best electric toothbrush for braces.
Features – Oral-B Genius 9000
The Oral-B Genius 9000 has all the features that you could need on an electric toothbrush. It has a 2 minute quadpacer timer and a visible pressure sensor. The visible pressure sensor is known as a 360 degree smart ring because the colour it flashes can be changed using the Oral-B app.
The Oral-B Genius 9000 is compatible with the Ortho essentials pack which means that it can be customised to work well with braces. As standard, the Genius 9000 comes with a crossaction brush head (my favourite normal brush head), the sensi clean and 3D whitening brush head. The Ortho essentials pack will have to be bought separately.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Genius 9000
The Oral-B Genius 9000 uses the 3D oscillating rotating action. This means that it will clean your teeth well, as it outperforms both sonic and manual in clinical trials. The cleaning power of an electric toothbrush is particularly important for people wearing braces because braces will ultimately trap more plaque.
Battery Life – Oral-B Genius 9000
The battery life for the Oral-B Genius 9000 is the best of the bunch coming in at 14 days of 2 minutes twice a day use. This translates to 56 minutes of continuous use. The lithium ion battery that the Oral-B Genius 9000 uses also charges the quickest, taking 5-6 hours to recharge from completely flat.
Travel Case – Oral-B Genius 9000
The travel case is both well made and stylish. It is made from soft touch plastic materials and is covered with a faux leather. This makes it both durable and practical. Unlike the Oral-B Genius 8000 the travel case charges the electric toothbrush handle, this is a major upside as you will not need to carry your charger with you on holiday. The travel case also has a USB socket which means you can use it to charge your smartphone. An added bonus!
Waterproof – Oral-B Genius 9000
As with the most electric toothbrushes, the Oral-B Genius 9000 is waterproof so you can use it in the shower if you so wish.
Value for Money – Oral-B Genius 9000
The Oral-B Genius 9000 is not the cheapest electric toothbrush on the market, in fact it is one of the more expensive Oral-B electric toothbrushes. I think the Oral-B Genius 9000 represents great value for money because of the features it has and the build quality. Once the Oral-B Genius toothbrush handle is bought, the ongoing costs of brush heads is very similar to buying manual toothbrushes. Plus the Oral-B Genius 9000 comes with a 2 year warranty that can be extended to 3 years on the Oral-B website. This means that you can rest assured you will get at least 3 years life out of it.
Oral-B Genius 9000 – Best Electric toothbrush for Braces in the UK
The Oral-B Genius 9000 is a fantastic electric toothbrush and would thoroughly recommend to purchase it if you are looking for the best electric toothbrush for braces. I am fully aware that the price tag is higher than for a run of the mill electric toothbrush and yes you may not use all the features (At least they are there). You have to ask yourself, how much a trip to the dentist will cost if your oral hygiene is not good. In my books prevention is always better than cure.

Oral-B Smart 6
I will be honest with you the Oral-B Smart 6 is a toned down Oral-B Genius 9000. It comes with fewer features and thus it retails for a cheaper price. It is still a fantastic electric toothbrush for braces but the toned down features mean that it comes in second place rather than first. If you are not willing to pay for the Oral-B Genius 9000 and want something cheaper, this is the electric toothbrush for you.
Features – Oral-B Smart 6
As mentioned before the Oral-B Smart 6 comes with less features than the Oral-B Genius 9000 however it is still pretty good! The Oral-B Smart 6 has all the must have features that you want for an electric toothbrush for braces. It comes with a 2 minute quadpacer timer and a visible pressure sensor. The pressure sensor also has a smart ring which lets you change the colour it flashes when you press too firmly.
The brush heads that are included as standard for the Oral-B Smart 6 are as follows:
- Oral-B CrossAction (my favourite non-specialised brush head)
- Sensitive Brush Head
- 3D whitening Brush head
If you want to cutomise the Oral-B Smart 6 to be good with braces, you will have to purchase the Oral-B Ortho Essentials pack. I would thoroughly recommend that you do this.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Smart 6
The Oral-B Smart 6 uses the 3D oscillating rotating cleaning action which is my favored cleaning action. The Oscillating rotating cleaning motion has been proven to be better than both sonic and manual. This means that you braces will get a better clean.
Battery life – Oral-B Smart 6
The Oral-B Smart 6 uses the same lithium-ion battery that the Oral-B Genius 9000 uses. The Lithium-ion battery lasts for 2 weeks using it 2 weeks twice a day. This translates into 56 minutes of continuous use, which means more usage time between charges.
The Lithium-ion battery also charges quicker than the old nickel hydride type battery. It takes roughly 5-6 hours for it to be charged from completely flat.
Travel Case – Oral-B Smart 6
The Oral-b Smart 6 has a travel case that is remarkably similar to the Oral-B Genius 9000, however, it does not charge the electric toothbrush handle. It is still made from the same luxurious soft touch faux leather material. It also carries two brush heads and the electric toothbrush handle as well.
Value for Money – Oral-B Smart 6
Check out how much you can get the Oral-B Smart 6 on Amazon. This comes with free super saver delivery over £20. I think this represents pretty good value for money given how well it cleans braces.
Also, the electric toothbrush handle is a one-off cost. Once this has been bought the only real ongoing cost will be the Oral-B Ortho brush heads and interspace brush which are relatively cheap in comparison.
The Oral-B Smart 6 comes with a 2 year warranty which can be extended to 3 years on the Oral-B website. This means that you know for certain you will have an electric toothbrush for 3 years. The average length of time for braces treatment is around 2 years.
Oral-B Smart 6 – Second Best Electric toothbrush for Braces in the UK
The Oral-B Smart 6 is the second best electric toothbrush for braces. It is very close to being the best however because it is so similar in price and features to the Oral-B Genius 9000, it cannot be crowned the winner.
The Oral-B Smart 6 is for people who want a similar electric toothbrush to the Oral-B Genius 9000 but want it at a slightly discounted price. Always remember though cheaper products, particularly from the same manufacturers come with fewer features.

Oral-B 2 2500W
The Oral-B 2 2500W is a change up from the last two electric toothbrushes. It is a much cheaper electric toothbrush that “does the job” but is incredible value for money. It has all the necessary features for a great electric toothbrush for braces but no fancy stuff. If you are looking for a functional electric toothbrush which cleans your braces well whilst being cheap price wise, this is the electric toothbrush for you.
Features – Oral-B Pro 2 2500W
The Oral-B Pro 2 2500 comes with fewer features than the previous two electric toothbrushes. It does have a 2 minute quadpacer timer and a visible pressure sensor. Both these features are essential for any electric toothbrush for braces. It does not have Bluetooth connectivity to the Oral-B app or a smart ring.
The Oral-B Pro 2 2500 comes as standard with the 3D Whitening brush head, therefore, you would have to buy the Oral-B Ortho Essential pack to customize it. Since you are using it for braces, I would thoroughly recommend this.
Cleaning Power – Oral-B Pro 2 2500W
The Oral-B Pro 2 2500 produced great cleaning power and can clean your braces as well as any electric toothbrush on this list. It uses the same 3D oscillating rotating motion that the other electric toothbrushes use. It only has 2 cleaning modes but you are going to stick it in daily clean mode anyway.

Battery life – Oral-B Pro 2 2500W
The Oral-B Pro 2 2500W has a lithium-ion battery which is amazing considering its price. This means that the Oral-B Pro 2 2500 will last double what it used to. The Oral-B Pro 2 2500 battery life is 2 weeks twice a day for 2 minutes. This translates to 56 minutes of continuous brushing time.
It also charges quicker, taking 5-6 hours from completely flat to fully charged. This means more time spent brushing your teeth and less time messing around charging!
Travel Case – Oral-B Pro 2 2500W
The thing I really like about the Oral-B Pro 2 2500 is that it has a travel case. Admittedly the travel case won’t win any design awards as it is cheap hard plastic, but it is practical.
The Oral-B Pro 2 2500 travel case carries the electric toothbrush handle and 2 x brush heads and is useful when going on holiday.
Value for Money – Oral-B Pro 2 2500W
This is where the Oral-B Pro 2 2500W really shines. Given that it is almost half the price of the Oral-B Genius 9000, it represents incredible value for money. The Oral-B Pro 2 2500W comes with a 2 year warranty that can be extended to 3 years by visiting the Oral-B website. Since the average course of braces is treatment is 2 years or less, this means that it will last for at least your course of braces treatment.
Oral-B Pro 2 2500W – Third Best Electric toothbrush for Braces in the UK
The Oral- B Pro 2 2500W when equipped with an Oral-B Ortho brush head is a fantastic, basic electric toothbrush for braces. In fact, when taking into consideration the price, I doubt you can do much better.
